Satisfied with her attack, she backed off a little as the Charmander was pushed away by a few feet, giving him some time to recover as she did the same. The battle was dragging on longer than she wanted it, soon she'd be too tired to pull off a decent attack. She dodged away from the Dragon Pulse, and then curled over herself in an attempt to cover up her weaker points. It wasn't going to help quite as much as weakening the Charmander, but it would be worth it if the battle were to go on as it was. Female Miltank dodged! Female Miltank used Defense Curl! |

Once again, Miltank proved itself to be faster than Kenneth expected, this time by evading Charmander's Dragon Pulse. Its success elicited a dissatisfied grunt from the Trainer, who resolved in that moment not to exclude that factor from his strategy in the coming rounds. He was going to have to assume that Miltank would be fast now, and his commands would need to reflect that by accounting for the possibility that Charmander's attacks would miss or be evaded. Clearly, they weren't going to be able to resolve this as quickly as they'd overcome Skorupi, but Kenneth could tell that they were steadily wearing Miltank down. It was a battle of attrition and strategy now, and the two of them were not going to come out the losers.
In its curled position, Miltank would be hard to hurt, but it would also be very unlikely to evade any assaults. It was the perfect time to launch a vicious assault. "Charmander, hit it with Flare Blitz and tumble back!" Kenneth ordered. "Follow up with Dragon Pulse!" He planned for Charmander to use the recoil from Flare Blitz to his advantage by using the backwards momentum to aid in a speedy retreat. Hopefully, the attack would stagger Miltank enough to leave it vulnerable to the succeeding Dragon Pulse. Kenneth was confident that the combination of attacks would be enough leave their opponent on the edge of defeat, but the plan would fall apart of Flare Blitz missed for any reason. Not only that, but it would end catastrophically, surely leaving Charmander open to a counterattack.

The Flare Blitz hit its mark again, disorienting her, blurring her vision for a moment as she took in the pain. And then came the second attack. With that she was pushed back, her knees gave way as she dropped to the ground on her back. Female Miltank is available for capture! |

Once again, Kenneth watched with well-concealed glee as Charmander executed his plan, and his joy was amplified by the thrill of victory. He observed with bated breath as the Miltank toppled over onto its back, and this time, it did not get back up. Charmander was breathing pretty heavily, feeling pretty worn out himself, but he was standing strong and triumphant. The Trainer felt the urge to throw his fist up and cheer as he had after capturing Skorupi, but the sight of the downed Miltank gave him pause. He was proud to have won, but was this really how he was supposed to make his Pokémon stronger? It seemed somewhat inhumane, especially since he was leaving a creature that he had injured alone in the wilderness.
The guilt of that thought began to overcome him, but Charmander was unaffected. In fact, the hot-blooded lizard had already leaped up and down gleefully several times, only stopping to look upon his Trainer in confusion when the young man failed to do the same. To prevent Charmander from getting the wrong idea, Kenneth forced a smile onto his face, walked over to his partner and took a knee to pat him on the head. "Great job, Charmander," he said. "I know I didn't choose you like most Trainers would have, but I'm proud of the way you've been performing. I'm lucky to have you on my side." The impromptu speech was a bit out of place for something so simple as a victory over a Wild Pokémon, but for Kenneth, that represented a major milestone. Not only had he definitively proved that this journey would be far more successful than his last, but he had also acquired hard evidence that his strategies mattered more than the power of his Pokémon. With superior planning, he'd led his Charmander to victory over a much larger foe. He would keep this victory in mind for as long as he lived.
Once Charmander had joyfully acknowledged his Trainer's praise, Kenneth stood up and walked over to the Miltank. "Hey. Umm...Good fight," he said awkwardly, hoping that his closeness would be well-received. "This is actually my first battle with a Wild Pokémon that I don't intend to capture, and I know we were pretty rough on you. Will you be all right?" He was sure that there was a Pokémon Center that wasn't too far from their current location, and he could get the Miltank there if he had to. He couldn't carry it, his hope was that it could walk the distance with some support. Of course, it would be super awesome if the creature didn't need his help at all. It was getting late, and Kenneth didn't want to go too much farther before setting up camp for the night.

When it became apparent that Miltank was sleeping, Kenneth smiled gently. "Well, I guess I'll leave you be, then," he whispered. "Thanks a lot." He stood back up and turned to face Charmander, placing a finger over his mouth to indicate the need to be quiet. Quietly, they walked side by side away from the downed Pokémon. They continued forward along their path until the sound of quiet snoring drew Kenneth's attention. It wasn't something that would have done more than slow him down normally, but as he glanced about curiously in search of the source, his eyes went wide. Could it be? Was he seeing what he thought he was seeing? Eagerly, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his Pokédex, and opened it.
Abra, the Psi Pokémon. When Abra senses an imminent attack, it escapes by teleporting.
It was! He had happened upon his first Wild Psychic Pokémon, an Abra, and it was there for the taking. Its Pokédex entry had him concerned, though. If he tried to fight it, would it stick around? Or would it just vanish on him immediately? He really didn't want to miss out on this chance to capture a Pokémon of his favorite type so early on in his journey, but he wished his quarry would be less likely to run. Still, he had to try. He quickly came up with a plan and a back-up plan and shared both with Charmander, speaking at a whisper all the while. "I wanna capture that Abra, Charmander," he began. "I can use the fact that it's sleeping to my advantage, so I'm going to try a cold capture. If that fails, I need you to be ready to strike as soon as it breaks out." The smile Charmander gave him in response was a halfhearted one, and Kenneth understood his reasoning. With a few words, he reassured his partner. "If it comes down to a battle, this will be the last one I'll ask you to fight tonight. I promise." He smiled, then turned to face the sleeping Abra. His hand went to his belt and pulled free one of his last remaining empty Pokéballs. It was time to take a leap of faith.
The Trainer took aim and threw his Pokéball, aiming to strike Abra squarely on the head with it. He knew starting out that cold captures weren't usually wise moves, but he also knew that a Pokémon was less able to struggle against capture if it was asleep. If Abra was also weak to begin with (he couldn't be sure of that, but a man could hope), his chances were even better. Either way, he could only hope that Charmander would be quick enough if the attempt failed; if the capture attempt managed to wake Abra up, he doubted that it would stick around to find out who'd thrown a Pokéball at it or why.

Kenneth hesitated to react as he watched his Pokéball stop shaking and heard the telltale tone that indicated a successful capture. Had it really been that easy? Had he caught an Abra without any struggle or fuss? He jogged over to the stagnant item took it up into his hand to examine it more closely. "I got it," he muttered, a smile slowly working itself across his face as the happy truth settled in. He repeated that observation again, all but shouting this time as he flung the hand containing the Pokéball into the air. Charmander looked pleased as well, but not so excited; he'd hoped for a battle and was disappointed not to have gotten one. Still, he was glad that his Trainer was happy and hopeful that he and this new member of the team would be kindred spirits. He smiled up at Kenneth and happily called "Char!" as an expression of congratulations.
Kenneth calmed himself after a few moments and looked around to make sure no one but Charmander had seen him behave so foolishly. He was off to a great start, and the way he saw it, it could only get better from there. Having fairly low expectations to begin with helped him maintain that idea, as any level of success higher than utter, humiliating failure would be great to him. He was going to try hard, though. For the sake of his Pokémon, he was going to try hard. Looking down at Charmander, he smiled and spoke. "This is the beginning of a great journey, Charmander. Just you watch." That said, he minimized his new Abra's Pokéball and placed it back on his belt. He looked up at the sky to see that the sun was almost gone, leaving the moon and the stars in its place. It would be too dark to travel safely soon. "That's enough for one day, I think. Let's set up camp." At a time like this, he was glad to have Charmander to be his companion. The camp would come together much more easily with his help, and his companionship would help stave off the eerie nature of the night.
