The Curse of the Sun and the Moon was real and it was broken in January, a mere nine months ago. Now werewolves are able to keep their human minds while in wolf form, although they are still unable to control their transformations and they still hurt like no other, and vampires now only need rings three out of four weeks of the month, on the week of the full moon they are able to walk in the sun, although if they walk for more than a few hours it can cause what appears to be an intense sunburn that will last for a few painful days.
Klaus had been the one to break the curse and Elena, Jules, and Jenna were all killed in the process, Damon had decided not to give Elena his blood since for once he respected her choice and the elixir did absolutely nothing for the Gilbert girl. Klaus had thought the entire curse to be made up but he didn't know that when he started the rumor about the "actual" curse that the strongest witches of that age had bound together to put those extra stipulations on the curse in their last ditch attempt to protect nature
The vampires and the werewolves are still archenemies, centuries of hating each other can do that to a group, and they do not seem anywhere close to being able to keep from trying to massacre each other let alone to band together to try and defeat the ultimate hybrid.
Mystic Falls is moving along like it always has but once again darkness is afoot.
