Alan's first and most prized pokemon, though this prime companion was accidentally stumbled upon, he holds no regrets. Their chanced meeting occurred during the routine duties of his volunteer work which mainly involved sweeping the legendary pokemon shrines in Celestic Town. Noticing a red/white ball out of the corner of his eye, Alan went to retrieve the object with his broom and dustpan. However, upon closer inspection, he realized it was a pokeball. After studying the famed item for a few moments he soon noticed a round apparition like creature float in front of him. Although initially frightened, the balloon pokemon's cheerful bouncing soon calmed him down. Before long, the two had become instant friends, and as a result, the ghostly balloon submitted itself willingly into the pokeball Alan had been holding. Ever since then, Alan has not only gained a new friend but from that moment forth, started his career as a pokemon trainer.

In all truth, the first pokemon Alan has ever officially caught. The circumstances with Drifloon were a lot different as he sort of just fell into his possession, but with Yamask, this is a pokemon he had to capture. He encountered the mask bearing Ghost-Type in the Mistralton Cave just off the path of Route 6. Alan had detoured as he was too afraid to walk the mazed path over the river given his inability to swim should a horrible unforeseen occurrence take place. He had run into the Yamask after falling down in the wet puddles of the cave. After being startled, Alan had summoned his Drifloon and from there Yamask made the first move and battle ensued. After a good few rounds, Yamask was eventually damaged and submitted by Alan's pokeball.

More of an unplanned and sort of, spur of the moment, addition to his team. Alan encountered Mantyke immediately after his successful capture of Yamask, the sting ray pokemon greeted he and his Drifloon with a surprise bubble attack as it surfaced from the deeper waters of the cave. In response, Alan and Drifloon naturally retaliated, but due to Drifloon's fatigue from its battle with Yamask, the two pokemon only traded blows for one round. Instead of risking Drifloon's well being past its level of endurance, he decided the only other way to deal with the Mantyke was to capture it. Hence now it is a proud member of Alan's pokemon team.

Alan had received word of a poke ranch in the north-east of the Unova region, specifically in Lacunosa Town. Although the trip was out of his way, he simply could not pass up the opportunity to perhaps purchase pokemon from some of the regions top breeders. Upon arrival, the ranch had a Charmander, Treecko, Sentret and Wingull advertised for sale. Had he not went in asked if these were all of the pokemon the ranch was willing to vender, he would have missed the Bouffalant charging around in the back stables. Alan immediately fell in love with the Buffalo pokemon, she represented the strong physical foundation his team was lacking. With long hours of persuasion and sob stories, he had finally got the breeders to sell it to him despite the fact that she was originally not for sale. Now Bouffalant is the solid rock who's shoulders his pokemon team stands upon.

After his journey from Lucanosa Town Alan figured he may as well visit the neighboring Undella Town since he was already on the end. He went not expecting a whole lot, but usually when that happens, he ends up getting wrapped up in an adventure. This rule held true as he came up on a game called Bulba Bulbasaur, pick the right Bulbasaur and you win a prize. Naturally, Alan picked the normal Ivysaur that was standing in front of him, and before he knew it, there were bells sounding and cheers from the onlookers behind him. At first he did not know that he was the source of everyone's cheer. It did not hit him that he actually won until he was handed the pokeball containing Shelmet. Stunned and excited all at the same time, he could not help but admire how lucky he was to add such a great pokemon to his team by chance.
