In the comfort of his own darkness
He winced.
A few stray strands of sunlight had broken through the leafy shelter of the tree he had sought refuge from the previous night, causing him to stir. Suppressing a groan, the boy turned away from the offending rays, his eyes fluttered open. Momentarily dazed from sleep, it was a while before he recalled where he was. Pressing his hands onto his grassy bed, he pushed himself up so that he sat with his back against the rough bark of the tree. It wasn’t the most ideal location for spending the night, but he had preferred it to imposing on someone else’s hospitality, least his symptoms were to arise. God forbid anyone here to find out he was sick. It was… better this way.
He breathed deep. Beyond the ledge several feet away, he could see that the village below had already begun to go through its daily motions. Women busied themselves in their gardens; the mail man making his rounds; children playing in the field (no doubt having mock pokemon battles, practicing for the day that they would receive their very own starter pokemon). It was a pleasant scene, almost enough to make him forget about his troubles; almost, that is.
Xavier gritted his teeth. Almost subconsciously, his hand went to his chest, where he squeezed hard at the fabric of his shirt. Why did he have to be born this way? Once again, the question that plagued his every waking hour nagged at his mind, sending waves of hate and despair through his malformed heart. He closed his eyes and allowed the memories to play in his mind; memories of that day, and that last visit to the doctor’s. He had always been a sickly kid. But it was only when the doctor gave his verdict that he decided that he had had enough. He was as good as dead. And if he would die regardless, there was no point in staying behind any longer. He was a burden to all he knew, after all.
It had only been a few short days since the runaway’s arrival here in the region of Unova. Having stolen away in the middle of the night with nothing but a spare change of clothes and a few basic necessities, he’d taken the first boat he could find. It didn’t matter where he went. All that mattered was that he would disappear. He closed his eyes briefly before slowly opening them again. For some odd reason, he found himself comforted in the agony.
From the corner of his eyes, he gazed at the lump on one of the side pockets of his onyx canvas backpack. Due to his condition, becoming a trainer had been a dream he’d long given up upon back in Sinnoh. It was only by chance that he had met that researcher, and it was by that chance that he had come to acquire his first partner, Snivy. He had been hesitant at first, but believing he had nothing to lose, he had accepted the pokemon and had since registered himself for the league. He needed something to help pass the time.

Nix sat under one of the larger bushes up the path way with the branches and leaves twisting round her and hiding her away, well all of her side her bright red hair. Her starter pokemon, a Ralts call phantom was running back and forth outside the little shelter nix had made and every few moments a deerling would run past and try to drop his head to catch him, nix smiled at her boys before leaning back against a thick branch behind her.
On her lap her eevee stirred from her sleep and lifted her head and nix opened one bright Green eye to look down at her, shadow looked up at nix before mewing and standing up and stretching herself out and hopping down from nixs lap and walking out of the entrance to the shelter and sitting down outside.
Nix rolled her eyes and leaned forwards until she was on her knees and then she crawled out of the shelter and sat down on the path way as phantom came running past her, she dropped her head quickly as the deerling jumped over her and then she started to laugh as shadow shot forwards in to her arms and mewed again. "we re staying here for a bit shadow, Tain and tommy are playing" nix told her and the eevee nodded her head at nix stroked the odd tuft of fur between her ears that stuck up, shadow flicked her tail which had a similar tuft of pointed fur and nix nodded before stroking the Eevee's back with a grin

In the comfort of his own darkness
The youth stretched himself out, loosening the muscles stiff from sleeping on the hard ground. Casting another side-long glance at his pack, he sighed. For Snivy's sake at least, it was time to look for some breakfast.
He pushed himself up so that he knelt with one knee on the ground. Even under the shade of the tree, the dew had dried from the grass. Reaching out, he grabbed his pack and pulled it close to his chest. Nimbly, he tugged open the zipper of the compartment he had set aside for his partner's pokeball.
As the metal undid itself, the tiny red and white orb slid easily into his hand. Relatively new, the pokeball felt smooth and glossy to the touch. Without hesitation, Xavier pressed the pearl button and with a small whirling sound, the orb grew to its full size. He pointed the ball away from himself and released its contents.
The female pokemon appeared in a blinding flash of light. "Sniv~" she called out as she stretched herself. He smiled, the slight upturn of his lips were faint, hardly visible. The young pokemon was barely more than an infant, a tiny thing with no battle experience whatsoever. He had to admit, Snivy managed to pull off an unrivaled sense of cuteness while retaining the regal elegance that the boy knew to be typical of her kind, which was probably why he hadn't considered giving her a nickname. She wasn't some pet, and as far as he was concerned, the name 'Snivy' suited the gentle yet confident creature just fine.
"Let's find some breakfast," he instructed his partner.
"Sniv~" she cooed in return, bringing yet another ghost of a smile to his face.
She scampered off. Shouldering his pack, the silver-haired youth brushed his hand through his fairly neat top of hair and followed after.

Nix rocked back on her heels and leaned up against the shelter she had made the night before and she watched her boys jog back and and forwards in different directions. Nix smiled before leaning forwards and taking her long and dark leather coat off and then she tossed it over the back of the bush and then she tugged at her belt and quickly ran her fingers over the different pockets and balls.
Her fingers brushed the potions pouch and she felt her supplies knock against her and then the same over her pokeballs pouch, she smiled to herself as her fingers came over each of her pokemons personalised balls. Tains had a simple T with long vines and leaves branching off it ,jarks was a rain drop with a J in it's centre, phantoms had only basic tent on it with a P in it's centre and three crosses round the letter. She hand stopped over shadows and she plucked it from her belt as shadow herself walked in to nix's lap and curled her tail around herself as she watched the boys play, shadow's ball had a ball of flames cut in to with a S in it's centre, it was nix's favourite ball of all the ones she had carved.
Nix lifted her head to see Tain now walking over to her and the deerling laid down beside her and rested his head on her side and nix smiled at him before resting her hand between his ears. Jark and phantom were still running around playing tag in front of nixs resting trio and then while phantom paused to wave at her ,jark jumped on to his back and flattened him while everyone started laughing

In the comfort of his own darkness
He'd found the young pokemon staring longingly at the pink fruit in the tree. She had made no move to indicate what she wanted, and neither did she make a single sound as her trainer approached. Instead, she had simply stood there, just looking at the fruit, as though entranced by the object hanging on a low branch. Standing at a mere one and a half foot tall, which was in fact smaller than most Snivys, even the lowest branch was well out of her reach.
Xavier may not have known the tiny snake-like pokemon for very long, but it would have taken an idiot to not know what she wanted. The professor had told him that Pecha berries were Snivy's favorite food. Oddly enough, the fifteen-year-old found this peculiar behavior somewhat endearing. Shivy was a quiet creature who had never made a fuss since becoming his partner. It was an aspect he could appreciate. But truly, even Xavier had been surprised to find that he had very little problems understanding her needs during the past week that he had been with her even though the grass pokemon was not particularly inclined to express herself. He supposed it was because he himself was normally reluctant to ask anyone for anything back when he had been under the care of his parents. In that sense, he and Snivy probably shared the same trait.
Walking up to the tree, he reached up and plucked the fruit from the branch. Kneeling beside his partner, he handed her the fruit. "Sniv~" she cried out in delight. Settling herself down, the pokemon began nibbling away at the berry.
He chuckled inwardly in spite of himself. It was a convenient thing that Pecha berries were sweet. Reaching up once more, he picked another berry for himself.
Just as he was finishing his fruit though, the sounds of laughter caught his attention. The youth threw the last of the fruit into his mouth, and for a moment, debated on whether to investigate or to walk away. But before he could make up his mind, the decision was made for him when dear Snivy dropped her half eaten fruit and scampered off towards the sound. Not bothering to raise his voice at her, the boy followed after his precarious pokemon.
She shot through the undergrowth, curious by the sounds of laughter and pitter pattering of feet on the forest floor. Even this close to the town, wild pokemon were plentiful. But then, these sounds were somehow different to the ones said wild pokemon would make.
The tiny Snivy cleared one bush, and then another, and then...
"Sniv~" she yelped in surprise as a blue... something whizzed past her. Maybe, just maybe, she shouldn't have run off from Xavier after all.

Nix felt Tain drop his head on to her lap and he gave a soft cry ,"deeeerr" he muttered as he closed his eyes and flicked his ears gently ,shadow flicked her tail up at the feeling of something against her own ears and she gave a mutter and turned he head away from jark and phantom to look at tain sitting beside her.
Out of all nixs team, shadow and Tain got on better as a pair out of battle and phantom and jark better as a pair, in battle it was different as phantom and Tain and shadow never would allow themselves to lose is they had power in their bodies. Jark was the younger pokemon on the team by two levels and in battle he was normally more worried about looking weak or looking to be lesser than his team mates so he tried as hard as he could but nix also saw that many times he felt bad for hurting his opponents and she didn't want him to. So she was planning on exchanging him to a friend of hers when she could so that he could train alongside different pokemon and not feel like be had to try to always be better than Tain or phantom.
Nix suddenly jolted upright as she heard jark give a cry, Tain lifted his head and looked around and his tail flicked up and his eyes narrowed, shadow flicked her tail out from around her and rocked forwards onto her paws as nix spotted jark kneeling down next to a bush. Phantom stood next to him with his arms crossed and his brows furrowed, he both wanted to keep playing but wanted to know what jark had seen too so he was settling for just standing near to the water type in hope that one of the things he wanted would happen soon enough

In the comfort of his own darkness
"Sniv~!"
The white-haired trainer muttered an oath under his breath when he heard his pokemon's call some distance ahead. Although the little grass pokemon was generally obedient, she did have a tendency to wander off on her own on occasion. Although Xavier considered his partner's childlike curiosity to be a healthy trait for the young-ling, there was no doubt that Snivy's inquisitiveness would get her into trouble eventually. He broke into a run, hoping that she would be alright.
He breathed hard as he pushed through the thick undergrowth. It was one of the drawbacks of being born with a faulty heart, that the boy lacked stamina. Pausing briefly, the attempted to catch his breath while willing the throbbing in his chest to subside. Now was hardly an ideal time to fall ill to his symptoms. Taking another deep breath, he exhaled slowly and continued through the bushes.
Coming to a clearing of sorts, he sighed. On the earthen ground just a few feet away, sat his little Snivy, clutching the leaf on her tail, looking slightly shaken, but otherwise unharmed. He came forward and scooped the creature into his arms. "Honestly, you know better than to run off like that," he chided lightly. From his pocket, he produced another pink fruit, a berry he had been planning on saving for later. Calming down at the sight of her favorite food, the pokemon took it gratefully and began nibbling on it.
It was then that Xavier noticed the presence of others in the clearing. Several pokemon as well as a girl sitting under a makeshift shelter. Not really one to initiate a conversation, Xavier simply stood and waited for the girl to respond.

Nix heard something move in the bushes and she watched her team shift around the little crowding they had all been resting in. jark came running away from the bushes and over to her side where he pulled himself in to her lap beside shadow and leaned against her and whined in fear a little. Phantom shot up from his nap and jumped out from his place in nix's lap and then nodded to Tain who had now stood up from his own rest and they both walked forwards towards the noise and then stood beside the bush as a young boy came out from it with a small but cute looking snivy in his arms.
Shadow was the only pokemon on nix's team to react as she always did, she pressed her paws up nix's side and climbed up to her shoulder where she sat down and wrapped her tail around the back of nix's neck and rested in on her other shoulder. Nix smiled at her only girl before lifting a hand and waving at the boy who seemed a bit worse for wear from his bush wander ,"boys come here, they haven't done anything and people are welcome to use the paths if they want to" nix called out to Tain and phantom and both looked the boy over. Phantoms bravado was gone the moment he saw the other poke on and he dashed over to the boy before jumping on to his shoe and tugging at his sock while pointing up at the snivy in his arms, Tain on the other hand huffed before just turning himself a bit so he could watch the boy better

In the comfort of his own darkness
Xavier suppressed the urge to shift uneasily as his presence caused a a stir among the pokemon and the single trainer who were in that clearing. As a sickly child, his parents had not permitted him to mix much with other people, let alone children his age. There had even been a time, in fact, when Xavier, then just barely more than a toddler, received the stressful notion that his parents had been ashamed of him and were afraid to let the existence of their less-than-perfect child be known to the world. And so, it was no surprise that the white-haired teenager had grown up preferring to be by himself than to be around others.
He stayed rooted to his spot when the red-haired human called for her pokemon, and silently watched as the pokemon began to move away. He eyed curiously, the lone ralts who not only stayed behind, but came up to him instead. It took an incredible amount of effort to keep from dropping his feeding Snivy in surprise when the psychic pokemon jumped onto his shoe and began tugging excitedly at his socks. The strange pokemon had articulated its desire by pointing up at the tiny green package in his arms.
Smiling ever so slightly, the boy stepped backwards lowered himself so that he stooped a little ways from the ralts. He loosened his arm just a little so that his Snivy shifted its line of sight towards the friendly creature.
Suddenly aware of her surroundings, the little grass pokemon squirmed in his arm and called out in protest, likely upset from being interrupted in the midst of her meal. Xavier frowned. "Don't be like that," he told her gently, "I think he wants to say hi."
The grass pokemon looked at her trainer and then back at her fruit. As if making up her mind, she quickly finished her remaining morsel and jumped out of her trainer's protective embrace. "Sniv~ Snivy~," she said, extending one of her short green arms. The corners of her lips had widened into what Xavier could see was a sweet Snivy-grin.
He watched in interest as his adorable partner engaged the ralts without hesitation. He shook his head inwardly. If only it were that easy for humans to make friends. However, the thought was immediately shot down as he reminded himself why he could not afford to form bonds with anyone.

Nix smiled as the younger boy stepped back and put his snivy down for phantom to meet, phantom took it's hand and shook it before looking back over one sholder and waving it's free hand. Jark lifted his head and broke in to a wide smile before struggling out of his trainers lap again and running over towards the pair so fast he tipped over and hit the ground. Nix saw the issue coming before it he had ever hit the ground and was already standing up and walking over to him as he started to cry.
"I'm sorry, he only hatched a few days ago so he's our resident baby for now" nix said to the boy as she bent over and picked jark up hugged him close to her and tried to stop his tears. Phantom turned his gaze from the baby oshawott to tain and waved at him and Tain paused, on one hand he loved other grass types and lived playing and on the other he really had a thing against human boys. Nix rolled her eyes and dropped her head to touch jarks and the babies cries lowered a little and she drew back and looked at him ,"wanna go see them still?" she asked and jark nodded his head and whipped at his watery eyes as nix set him down on the ground and he walked over to the pair and then held a paw out to the snivy.
Tain took one more moment to think before walking over to the trio and then sniffing at the snivys lead tail and getting flicked on the nose by phantom, jark laughed at his elder team mates as Tain rolled his eyes and then butted phantoms head with his own and then he looked back at the snivy again and smiled. "boys..." nix muttered to herself as she stood up and dusted her knees down and she heard shadow snigger on her shoulder and nix smiled ,"it's a good job I have you" nix said and shadow flicked her tail happily at the comment as nix looked over at the boy ,"I won't bite" she said with a grin before holding a hand out to him

In the comfort of his own darkness
Xavier couldn't help but stiffen. Having been quietly observing the happenings going on in the small clearing since his arrival, he had seen it before it had happened. The little blue pokemon, an Oshawott, fell as he was running towards them. It didn't help when the little water pokemon began to cry, large tears rolling down its pale round face. Completely unsure of whether or not to leave his Snivy and go help the other trainer's pokemon, the rookie could do little but furrow his brows and look on, with the slight thinning of his lips hinting on the frustration that was building inside of him. The feeling of helplessness was something the had grown up with, but it was also something he had resolved to rid himself of on the night he ran away from home.
A couple of feet in front of him, his female grass pokemon, who had been enthusiastically shaking the hand of her new friend, had fallen silent as the accident unfolded. A glint of recognition in her eyes showed that she had realized that this pokemon had been the one who had startled her earlier on. Even so, the small frown she displayed showed that she too was upset that the youngster had fallen down. Her body tensed. She wanted to help, but then, her hand was still entangled with the ralt's.
Fortunately, both trainer and pokemon were spared of anymore discomfort when the red-haired trainer came forward to console her water pokemon. Xavier nodded shyly at the trainer's words and offered a weak smile as the hatchling approached.
Snivy had taken the Oshawott's paw gleefully, with her mouth widening into a broad grin. Judging by her size, Snivy had probably hatched not too long ago as well. The white-haired rookie's smile eased as he watched the pokemon frolic with his partner. A slight blush kissed the young Snivy's cheeks when the Deerling smiled at her after the playful butt it gave its team mate. Again, Xavier found himself thinking how nice it would be if he could make friends that easily. If only he were more like other boys.
Behind the pokemon, he saw the red-haired trainer got up. In spite of himself, the teenager's body stiffened once more as the trainer approached. Subconsciously, he gritted his teeth just slightly when she spoke again and held out her hand to him. After a moment of hesitation, he took her hand and shook. "I'm Xavier," was all he managed to say.
As if sensing her partner's discomfort, Snivy had left the company of her new friends to stand at her trainer's side. As both trainers shook hands, the little green pokemon took a few tentative steps forward and looked up at the stranger. No sounds were uttered as her mouth formed a tiny 'o' in curiosity.

Nix nodded her head at the boys name ,"nice to meet you xavier" she said with a smile before she looked down to see the snivy looking up at her and she blinked before shaking her head. "I'm so sorry, of course" she said and then rolled her bright eyes at her own stupidity ,"I should have introduced you to my team as well as myself ,this on my shoulder is shadow and the teams only resident girl" she said and then held up her free hand waved as shadow who lifted a paw and waved herself with a mew of greeting as nixs boys walked over to her side as well.
"tall and moody here is Tain, the father or older brother for everyone on the team" she said and then rested her hand between tains ears as he smilied in greeting himself, apparently now happier with the boy as he could sense he wasn't there to harm his team mates. "The small and crazy one is phantom, the freindly one who always walks in to say hi before seeing what's going on" she said as phantom raised a hand and waved to the boy and grinned up at him.
"And lastly is jark, our newborn baby boy who we all love to bits and so the one everyone has to help look after" she said and jark tried wave up at the boy even though he was still on the floor. "may I ask if your snivy has a name or if your not the sort to do that, I always name my team as I think it makes them more unique and special but not everyone shares my ideas on pokemon naming" she said with a small smile as she looked down at the snivy and grinned at her and waved her hand to say hi to the little grass type

In the comfort of his own darkness
Releasing the girl's hand, Xavier simply stood quietly while said girl introduced her pokemon. He cocked his head slightly. The concept of naming one's pokemon was strange enough for the youth; the concept of ranking them as family members on the team? Now that was just weird on a whole new level. That was what he had thought. Well, what could one expect of the boy who had spent practically his entire life on his own?
Of course, he very concept of family tended to make Xavier feel uneasy, as the very word 'family' brought to mind some very unpleasant memories. Memories of him being patronized, viewed condescendingly and treated as nothing more than a burden to others. And with these memories, came the unpleasant squirming in his gut, followed by the sickening urge to run away. Had he a pleasant family life in the first place, the boy doubted that he would have run away. However, that was mere wishful thinking. That is, something that Xavier had come to view in a negative light.
The youth did his best to suppress his discomfort, pointedly chasing it away with the slightly forced smile on his face. It was unlikely that anyone who hadn't gone through what he had experienced would be able to understand his thoughts. Ne nodded in acknowledgement when the female trainer gestured to each of her pokemon. They were a lovely bunch, he thought.
"Sniv~" the young grass pokemon called out when she heard herself being acknowledged by the other trainer, making Xavier glance down at her before turning his attention back at the girl. "Um~, no, not really. I've only just had her for about a week. But I do think that Snivy already has a great name. So, most likely, I'll continue to stick with that."
The young pokemon puffed out her chest, indicating that she too, liked the idea. Besides, it meant that Xavier would be calling her something different when she evolved. That, in turn, meant that her name would act as an indication of her growth.
Xavier stooped down to pick up the precarious green bundle of pride. Having someone else taking notice of his pokemon made him feel happy and perhaps even a little proud somehow. It was a novel sensation. Just then, he realized something. "Um, you forgot to mention your name," he told the female trainer, his voice cracking just a little due to his bashfulness. People skills were something he was going to have to work on from now on.

Nix smiled at the boys comment, “well noted” she said with a grin and then paused before holding her hand out again, “my name is Nix, Nix Night. If you know the second name from any where then don’t mention my family as I’ll most likely get angry and hit something and if you don’t, then all the better for both of us” she said with a smile as she heard shadow mutter on her shoulder. “shadow, you’re the only girl on our team, I don’t want you using words like that even if you are talking about them” nix scolded and shadow gave a small mew that nix knew meant simply, “but we all hate them”. Nix laughed and raised her free hand to stroke shadows odd tuft of hair on her head and then she looked back at the boy again.
“as I'm sure you can guess from my tone that me and my family don’t get on very well, but I require at least 3o minutes of talking or bonding before I discuss that most dark time of my childhood, people don’t seem to under stand unless they have been through the same pains and I'm not going to try and explain it to someone who doesn’t get it” she said and then shrugged her shoulders, “not meaning to be rude or harsh with that statement, just honest” she said and then have a half hearted smile as memories of the nine dark years that she was first alive filled her head and she flinched slightly.

In the comfort of his own darkness
"I see, so Nix is your name." The boy said, feeling slightly less queasy than before. It was a nice name, he thought. But before he was able to give any further comments, the girl called Nix had already started talking again... at breakneck pace. "I... see..." he repeated slowly, his tone much lower than before. A look of confusion mildly etched across his face as he continued to listen. She was saying something about another Nix somewhere... and something about mentioning her family... or um... not mentioning her family. Although he did not really comprehend what the female trainer was talking about, he felt somewhat uncomfortable about clarifying her words. Whatever it was, didn't sound pleasant.
However, it wasn't long before Xavier's unspoken question was answered. He nodded in agreement with the girl's words, although he did flinch visibly when she expressed her consent to talk about her problems after "30 minutes of bonding". It was true, no one could understand the pain from not being able to see eye to eye with one's family unless they'd experienced it for themselves. And it was certainly worse to be hated by one's on kin.
But without any further information, it was hard to say whether or not Nix shared similarly miserable memories as Xavier did where the subject of 'family' was concerned. As such, the boy could not quite count her as a 'kindred spirit' in any way. Not quite yet, anyway. In any case, even if it was strangely comforting to know that he wasn't the only one with issues, it wasn't exactly a pleasant thing to have in common with someone. Moreover, the taciturn teenager wasn't exactly the type who was inclined to share his inner most thoughts and feelings. Not least, after a mere 30 minutes of getting to know someone.
"Sniv~?" his partner cooed. Her large eyes held a hint of confusion and concern as she held him in her gaze. His sudden change in demeanor, it seemed, hadn't gone unnoticed by the inquisitive little being.
He smiled reassuringly at his partner, letting her know that he was alright. To Nix, he said, "I'm still new here in Unova. Snivy and I are heading towards Straiton City." He hesitated briefly, "We're looking forward to a hot meal and a perhaps a warm bed for tonight. It's been a while, since we've been constantly on the move." Another pause, "Would you... like to travel with us for a bit?"
All in all, Xavier still felt uncomfortable about travelling with others. He had promised himself that he would bond with no one while in Unova. He wouldn't pry into the female trainer's past, of course. But if she were willing to share, he wouldn't mind offering a listening ear. He hoped to reach the pokemon center before nightfall, as the idea of having to sleep outside should it rain didn't really appeal to him. That, and Snivy was long overdue for some actual pokemon food. Besides, it would probably do Snivy some good to spend some time around other pokemon.
